An unshaped ADSL account is a normal account with no restrictions on data protocols. Shaped ADSL accounts have priority scheduling on some protocols like HTTP, e-mail (POP and SMTP) and a few others. When the Internet is very busy (like during business hours) "unpopular protocols" which are at the bottom of the priority list, will take very long to download. Unshaped accounts work on first come first serve basis. This is why unshaped accounts are faster. Unshaped ADSL accounts are mostly used by online gamers and in business with VPN's (virtual private networks).
